As April begins, people around the world prepare to celebrate Earth Month, leading up to Earth Day on April 22. This time of year is not just about planting trees or cleaning up parks—it is also about protecting biodiversity, which means the variety of living things on Earth. Biodiversity includes all plants, animals, insects, and even tiny microorganisms, and each plays an important role in keeping ecosystems balanced. For example, bees help pollinate plants, forests clean the air, and oceans regulate the climate. When even one species is lost, it can affect many others in ways we might not immediately see. However, scientists warn that biodiversity is currently under serious threat. Human activities like deforestation, pollution, overfishing, and climate change are causing species to go extinct at a much more rapid rate than it historically has. According to environmental groups, many species could face extinction if action is not taken soon. Because of this, Earth Month is helping bring attention to the issue, with schools, communities, and organizations hosting events to educate people and encourage action.

Students are playing a big role this year by organizing clean-ups, starting eco-clubs, and encouraging others to make small changes in their daily lives. Simple actions—like reducing plastic use, saving water, and supporting sustainable products—can make a big difference over time. Protecting biodiversity is not just about saving animals or plants—it is also about protecting human life, since healthy ecosystems provide food, medicine, and clean water. As Earth Day approaches, the message is clear: everyone has a role to play. By working together and making environmentally friendly choices, people can help protect the planet’s rich biodiversity for future generations. This Earth Month, the goal is not just awareness—but action.
