A Sizzling Summer: Causes and Consequences of This Season’s Extreme Heat By Sara Torres

For decades, climate scientists have been warning the public about the extreme heat events we will face in the future. Yet this summer, their predictions materialized into an inescapable reality, with widespread droughts and heatwaves disrupting lives across the globe.

July of 2026 tied with 2024 to be the hottest month on record globally since 1850, according to NOAA though NASA and Copernicus each ranked it slightly differently. Unsurprisingly, experts have attributed these rising temperatures as a dominant driver of anthropogenic climate change.


The world’s heavy reliance on fossil fuels continues to produce consequences, with the IPCC finding that “vulnerable communities who have historically contributed the least to climate change are disproportionately affected [by it].” In the United States, 80 million people are under a Heat Advisory the week of August 24, 2026, with the most dangerous conditions focused in the South-Central region.


Meanwhile, many European countries are enduring their fifth heatwave of the season, bringing temperatures above 104 degrees Fahrenheit to a place with typically mild summers.


These conditions are more than inconvenient, they’re deadly. In June alone, the World Health Organization recorded at least 1,300 deaths in Europe from extreme heat. High temperatures exacerbate underlying health issues such as cardiovascular or respiratory complications, diabetes, and asthma. Low-income communities are particularly vulnerable to heat-related illnesses as they often lack air conditioning units. Furthermore, the urban heat island effect concentrates heat in densely developed areas, once again burdening frontline communities.

High summer temperatures are typically associated with greater energy demands for cooling, while heat simultaneously decreases the capacity of transmission lines. Due to this, rolling blackouts are likely to occur with more intense heat waves in upcoming years, especially as warming waters become less efficient at cooling power plants. In addition to worsening global warming, scientists are linking this summer’s heat intensity with a strong El Niño event. During an El Niño phase, weaker trade winds in the Pacific decrease upwelling, keeping heat trapped in the atmosphere and thus escalating heat waves. Unfortunately, El Niño has yet to peak, and past patterns indicate that next summer may bring even hotter conditions.


As activists push for more ambitious climate action from their governments, lawmakers across the globe must also establish short-term mitigation strategies to accommodate for such unprecedented levels of heat-related disasters. Innovation has sparked in South Korea, where drones were deployed to remote farmlands to broadcast heat warnings. South Korean college student Yoo Min-jun also developed an app that maps out shaded walking paths based on the positioning of the sun and infrastructure. These new mechanisms indicate the public’s struggle to balance everyday routines with life-threatening conditions.


The United Nations is implementing localized solutions for vulnerable populations through a variety of initiatives. Notably, the World Health Organization and World Meteorological Organization recently partnered with medical authorities in Africa to launch the Climate Health Desk earlier this year. This program concentrates data from different communities to promote timely, effective responses to sudden heat, as well as improves infrastructure that supports public health. Keeping people safe from extreme heat into the future requires comprehensive plans from governments to significantly slow down rates of global warming, while also aiding high-risk communities during inevitable heat disasters.


Decades of warnings have become this summer’s headlines – the question now is how fast adaptation can catch up.
